CONDUCT UNBECOMING’ Talk & Dinner with Richard Cock
CONDUCT UNBECOMING’ Talk & Dinner with Richard Cock
We are delighted to have Richard Cock back at Vergelegen to present this entertaining and anecdote-filled talk on conductors. Richard has been a friend of Vergelegen for many years, and is well known not only for his conducting prowess but also having been the host of Starlight Classics at the estate for the past 2 decades.
According to Richard, “Orchestral conductors work by an amalgam of psychology, magic and a storehouse of knowledge about music, people and how to get the best out of a collection of highly trained, highly individualistic, and highly strung people, all thrown together in a powder-keg that is the orchestra!”.
In his entertaining talk, Richard explores the world of the orchestral conductor, the good, the bad and the ugly, and debunks a few myths along the way. This hour of fun and laughter will provide fascinating insights about the mystical art of conducting. It is not a talk for the faint hearted – probably best ADULTS ONLY!
Guests will meet for a glass of wine on arrival, followed by the hour-long talk in our cozy library (surrounded by 4500 books) and conclude with a wintry 2-course meal at Stables Restaurant alongside the roaring fireplaces. We are determined not to let the winter weather get us down!
Details:
Date: Thursday, 10 July 2025
Time: 18h00
Cost: R695 per person (includes a glass of Heritage wine on arrival, the talk with Richard Cock and a wintry 2-course meal at Stables)
Place: Vergelegen Library and Stables Restaurant

Dinner of Discovery 2025 Edition - A Feast for the Senses at Nederburg
Dinner of Discovery 2025 Edition - A Feast for the Senses at Nederburg
There are dinners—and then there are experiences. Nederburg’s Dinner of Discovery series returns in 2025 with a bold new chapter, inviting guests on an unforgettable exploratory journey of taste, storytelling, and sensory wonder. Set across the expansive and evocative grounds of the historic Nederburg estate in Paarl, this year’s series is centered around curiosity, connection, and culinary exploration.
Inspired by Nederburg’s reputation as South Africa’s most globally travelled wine brand, this year’s edition embraces the spirit of exploration. Curated under the inspired direction of Head Chef Linda Trautmann, the 2025 edition dares guests to—to wander off the beaten path and discover food and wine in places where stories live, shadows dance, and flavours come alive.
This is not a traditional dining experience. Dinner of Discovery invites guests to dine in the unexpected—spaces that transform into stages for immersive, atmospheric storytelling. Without revealing too much, expect an unfolding of the evening—each course a new chapter, each location a new scene. It’s intimate, immersive, and ever-evolving.
Chef Linda’s menu, exclusive to the series, draws inspiration from memory, landscape, and emotion. Using seasonal produce sourced close to home, she creates thought-provoking dishes that evoke warmth, nostalgia, and surprise—each one paired to perfection with Nederburg’s award-winning wines.
Whether it’s the smokiness of an open fire, the richness of a slow-cooked sauce, or the unexpected crunch of something foraged, every flavour is meant to delight the senses and spark conversation.
"Dinner of Discovery is our way of extending what Nederburg represents beyond the tasting room and into the realm of memory and imagination," says Kate Jackson, Nederburg’s General Manager. “It’s not just a food and wine event—it’s a celebration of storytelling, of place, and of the people who bring it to life. We want our guests to walk away with more than a meal—we want them to leave with a sense of wonder.”
