Bree St Food Sundays Turns Every Bite Into Support for a People-First City

As part of Bree Street Sundays, a weekly open-street initiative running every Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00 until March 2026, the stretch between Wale and Strand Streets (including Shortmarket) becomes a pedestrian-friendly zone.
Powered by PAN Group and forming part of the broader open-street experiment by Street Experiments Afrika in collaboration with Young Urbanists South Africa and the City of Cape Town, under the leadership of Geordin Hill-Lewis, Bree Street Sundays reimagines what the inner city can feel like when streets are designed for people, not just cars.
Taking place on 29 March, and 26 April from 12:00 to 16:00, Bree St Food Sundays invites locals and visitors to stroll the street while sampling small tasting plates and cocktails, typically priced at R49 from sidewalk kitchens and casual bars.
Ten percent of every R49 spent at PAN Group affiliated venues goes directly back into supporting Bree St Sundays, helping sustain and grow this inclusive public space initiative.
With over 90% participation from local restaurants, the event brings food and drinks into the street, creating an accessible culinary experience that encourages exploration and connection.

Bree St Food Sundays is about more than tasting plates. The afternoons feature live music curated by The House of Machines and Noah by Charles Hope, informal football games, and child-friendly activities hosted by Archistas, creating a welcoming, multi-generational atmosphere.
Most cafés, restaurants and shops along Bree Street remain open throughout the day, inviting Capetonians to bring friends, children, bicycles, skateboards, books and spend time differently in the city.
The initiative forms part of an ongoing open-street experiment testing how public space can better serve community life, local business and social connection.
By simply enjoying a R49 tasting plate, visitors are not just sampling the best of Bree Street — they are actively investing in a more inclusive, vibrant and people-centred Cape Town.
