Hospitality Icon Tony Balabanoff Retires After 39 Years with City Lodge Hotels

City Lodge Hotels is bidding farewell to Tony Balabanoff, Divisional Director of Operations, who will retire on 30 June 2025 after an extraordinary 47-year career in the hospitality industry, 39 of which were with City Lodge Hotels. Starting from humble beginnings, Tony played a pivotal role in the company’s growth from one hotel to 58 properties and over 1300 employees. His career highlights include opening 16 hotels, managing operations across 47 properties, and co-developing a food and beverage strategy that now contributes 19% to the group’s turnover.

Tony’s journey began with an early passion for hospitality, leading to formal training and ongoing education, including programs at Cornell University and the University of Johannesburg. He co-founded the Housekeepers Association of Southern Africa (HASA) in 1993 to promote skills development and transformation in the industry. Throughout his career, he met numerous notable figures and credits his mentor, Hans Enderle, with shaping his leadership philosophy.

Known for his deep values, leadership, and people-first approach, Tony leaves behind a legacy of excellence and transformation. City Lodge CEO Andrew Widegger praised Tony’s lasting impact on the company’s culture and operations. As he retires, Tony expresses heartfelt gratitude to his colleagues and looks forward to new adventures with his family.
