Durban’s Cultural Renaissance: 9th Avenue Marina and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra Create a Symphony of Flavours
14 March 2026
In a city renowned for its coastline and vibrant heritage, a renewed focus on culture, cuisine, and refined experiences recently helped reshape Durban’s evening landscape. At the forefront of this revival was a unique collaboration between 9th Avenue Marina and the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra - an elegant pairing of fine dining and classical music that signalled a fresh chapter for the city’s cultural tourism.
The concept, aptly titled “A Symphony of Flavours,” brought together world-class music, sophisticated gastronomy, and the glamour of a refined night out in Durban. Designed as a complete sensory experience, the evening began at the marina-side restaurant overlooking the yacht basin, where guests were welcomed with gourmet starters and the promise of an extraordinary night ahead.
From there, patrons were transported to the historic The Playhouse Company for premium seating at the orchestra’s 2026 Summer Season opening concert. The programme, conducted by internationally respected maestro Yasuo Shinozaki, featured a repertoire that traversed European masterworks, blending French elegance, English lyricism, and Austrian romanticism.
Music lovers were treated to performances by acclaimed Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng, who joined the orchestra for the virtuosic Cello Concerto No. 2 by Camille Saint-Saëns. The programme also featured the graceful Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten, before the orchestra ignited the stage with Saint-Saëns’s powerful Cello Concerto No. 1. After the interval, the evening closed with the haunting beauty of Unfinished Symphony by Franz Schubert.
Yet the experience did not end with the final note.
Guests returned to 9th Avenue Marina for a specially curated dinner and dessert, sharing the table with the evening’s conductor, soloist, and members of the orchestra, transforming the night into a true meeting of art, conversation, and cuisine.
During intermission earlier in the evening, attendees also enjoyed an elegant tasting of Minuty Rosé. The orchestra’s music elevated the atmosphere, while guests themselves added to the spectacle, arriving beautifully dressed for an occasion that celebrated culture as much as it did cuisine.
According to the orchestra’s Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Bongani Tembe, the partnership represented an evolution of the traditional concert-going experience—one that merged performance with hospitality and storytelling.
For Durban, the collaboration represented more than a single event. It reflected a growing movement to restore the city’s reputation as a destination for sophisticated entertainment, fine dining, and cultural tourism.
In an era where experiences matter as much as destinations, evenings such as A Symphony of Flavours helped redefine what a night out in Durban could be: a harmonious blend of music, culinary artistry, and the timeless joy of gathering around culture.
As the city continues to reimagine itself, initiatives like this suggest that Durban’s cultural renaissance may well be conducted not just from the orchestra pit, but also from the dinner table overlooking its harbour.
