The President Hotel Unveils New Summer Look
09 December 2024
This Summer, The President Hotel unveils a new subtle creative shift giving the hotel’s brand a contemporary, playful re-look. With the appointment of local architect, interior and creative designer, Sarah Barnes, as their Creative Curator in residency.
Barnes has joined the project to reimagine the hotel's aesthetic, infusing it with a bespoke textile design that weaves together the rich history of its location and the vibrant local culture. This thoughtfully crafted design entitled “Opus” (meaning; an artistic work, especially one on a large scale) introduces a dynamic and layered dimension to the space, enhancing the hotel's identity and celebrating its unique connection to the surrounding environment.
Rather than relying on standard, traditional design elements, the aim was to capture a sense of sophistication—drawing subtle inspiration from the local neighbourhood and Cape Town — but with a uniquely South African twist. The design pulls the entire space together but also introduces a touch of quirkiness and creativity. It was intentionally created to be highly versatile, not only in its graphical application but also in its adaptability across different products and uses.
It’s All History ...
The new textile design draws inspiration from the hotel’s rich history and surroundings. It blends the hotel’s 1700s architectural heritage—iconic features like archways and balustrades—with the mid-century modern architectural influences from the Sea Point Promenade, as well as natural forms like the horizon, sun and rock pools.
Sarah explains, “Our goal was to take all these forms and elements—from the hotel's architecture, the promenade, and the iconic position it holds—and weave them into a single cohesive textile pattern. This design would serve as a unifying image, subtly integrated throughout the hotel in a way that feels proudly contemporary South African, while celebrating everything that makes the hotel truly unique. It brings together the essence of the past, the vibrant contemporary present and the exciting potential future”.
Location, Location, Location ...
The coastal position of the hotel played a major role in influencing the colour choices. “Overlooking the sea, we drew inspiration from the serene hues of sunrise, sunset and the ocean itself, blending these natural tones into a cohesive palette that not only reflects the beauty of the surrounding environment but also reinforces the hotel’s connection to its coastal setting,” explains Sarah.
Although the colour palette for the new textile design is vibrant and eye-catching, it is thoughtfully balanced to fit seamlessly within the hotel’s interior spaces without overwhelming them. “We wanted to create something that catches the eye but also feels harmonious within the existing environment,” says the hotel’s Brand Director, Joanne Clayton.
A key part of this approach was integrating the elements already prevalent throughout the hotel. Each sub-brand—such as The Cove Wellness Spa, Botany Café and the restaurant outlets —carry their own unique colour story, and the goal was to bring all these together into a unified palette that complements the overall identity of the hotel.
Stylish Yet Sustainable ...
As the largest hotel in Southern Africa to be Green Key certified, The President Hotel continues to be a leader in environmentally conscious hospitality. Green Key is a globally recognised eco-label for hotels that meet stringent environmental standards, ensuring that properties operate sustainably, reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to preserving natural resources for future generations.
The new designs incorporate sustainable materials and processes, from locally sourced textiles to eco-friendly manufacturing practices. Even the smallest details, like the pool towels and décor, reflect this commitment to a greener future.
The new design is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating beautifully crafted guest experiences. Each area—from the upgraded Deck Bar, to the newly refurbished Botany Café and the Cove Wellness Spa— integrates the new visual identity, with interconnected rooms now available to cater to larger families or groups. There are some exciting upcoming plans in place with a new Pool Deck, Terrace and Restaurant refurbishment in 2026.
The President Hotel’s new look and brand update is more than just a refresh—it’s a love letter to Cape Town and its people. A place where the stories of the past come alive in the designs of today, inspiring locals and visitors alike to see the city in a whole new way.
This summer, The President isn’t just a place to stay—it’s a place to connect, reflect and celebrate all that makes Cape Town extraordinary.
