The Marine Unveils a Refined New Chapter of Coastal Elegance
30 June 2026
There are few hotels in South Africa as intrinsically tied to their setting as The Marine. Perched on the cliffs of Walker Bay, where Southern Right Whales arrive each winter and the Cape's rich fynbos landscapes tumble towards the sea, the historic hotel has long been one of the country's most celebrated coastal escapes.
Now, following an extensive refurbishment of its ground-floor public spaces, The Marine has unveiled a thoughtful new chapter—one that honours more than 120 years of heritage while embracing the understated sophistication of contemporary luxury.
Rather than reinventing an icon, the transformation refines it.
The hotel's original architectural character remains beautifully intact, while a carefully considered interior redesign creates a seamless dialogue between mountain and ocean. Throughout the newly imagined spaces, nature becomes both inspiration and storyteller, with an earthy palette, tactile finishes and bespoke artistic details reflecting the unique beauty of the surrounding landscape.
The experience begins the moment guests step through the entrance. Reception welcomes with olive-green timber panelling, elegant cornices and lush botanical touches that frame the building's original arches, setting an immediate tone of quiet refinement.
Even the connecting corridors have become a destination in themselves. Stretching 86 metres across the ground floor, the once-functional passageways have been transformed into immersive galleries featuring exquisite hand-painted murals by local artists Tiziana Giardini and Felixa Rossi. Celebrating indigenous flora and fauna, the artworks create a continuous visual journey through the heart of the hotel.
Elsewhere, the refreshed Sun Lounge offers an elegant sanctuary where floor-to-ceiling views of Walker Bay remain the true centrepiece. Whether watching whales breach offshore or simply lingering over morning coffee, the space invites guests to slow down and reconnect with the rhythms of the coastline.
The Cocktail Bar has also been reimagined with a richer, moodier aesthetic inspired by the textures and colours of the Cape Floral Kingdom. It's an effortlessly glamorous setting for fresh West Coast oysters and a glass of sparkling wine as the light fades across the bay.
At the heart of the refurbishment lies The Pavilion Restaurant, where contemporary interiors complement one of South Africa's most spectacular dining outlooks. Here, locally inspired cuisine continues to celebrate regional flavours while the renewed design enhances the restaurant's enduring sense of occasion.
The result is more than a renovation. It is a carefully curated evolution that feels authentic to both The Marine's remarkable history and its extraordinary natural surroundings.
In an era where luxury is increasingly defined by craftsmanship, authenticity and a profound sense of place, The Marine's transformation is a reminder that the finest hotels don't need to shout. Sometimes, true luxury simply allows an iconic destination to become even more itself.
