30 October 2025
South Africa is celebrating a proud culinary triumph! Chef Zanté Neethling, representing Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, has been honoured with the prestigious S.Pellegrino Social Responsibility Award at the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Grand Finale held last night in Milan, Italy.
Her award-winning dish, “Tribute to the Khoi-Khoin Tara”, captivated the judges and audience alike - a masterful creation that celebrates South Africa’s indigenous heritage while embodying authenticity, sustainability, and innovation. The accolade recognises the young chef whose dish best reflects socially responsible practices, making Chef Neethling’s win a meaningful tribute to both her roots and her vision for the future of gastronomy.
The S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Competition 2024–2025, held at the iconic Castello Sforzesco in Milan, saw 15 of the world’s most talented young chefs compete for top honours after two years of regional and global rounds across 55 countries and 15 regions.
Alongside Chef Neethling’s win, Ardy Ferguson of Asia was crowned the overall S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Award 2025 winner for his dish “Archipelago Celebration.”
A distinguished Grand Jury of Michelin-starred chefs including Christophe Bacquié, Jeremy Chan, Antonia Klugmann, Niki Nakayama, Elena Reygadas, Julien Royer, and Mitsuharu Tsumura evaluated each finalist on creativity, skill, and purpose.
Guests at the awards ceremony were treated to an exclusive dining experience curated by two of the culinary world’s most influential figures: Pía León, chef-owner of Lima’s Kjolle, and Jessica Rosval, Head Chef of Casa Maria Luigiaand Al Gatto Verde.
Other collateral awards announced on the night included:
Acqua Panna Connection in Gastronomy Award – Chef Noah Wynants (North Europe) for his plant-based Dutch “Rendang.”
Fine Dining Lovers Food for Thought Award – Chef Nicolás A. López (USA) for Pork with Hints of the Sea, chosen by public vote.
This global competition, hosted by the S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy, continues to empower young chefs through mentorship, education, and career-shaping opportunities, a mission that Chef Neethling’s success embodies with grace and authenticity.
