We know. We totally ghosted you at the end of 2021, and we’re sorry. By December last year, the effects of 18 months of COVID-19 (if we never see or hear that term again, it will be too soon) and its disastrous consequences for our beloved theatre finally became insurmountable. We were forced to close our doors, and this time, it seemed like it was for good.

This, however, is Cape Town, the home of the surgical safari – the fat lady was far too busy having her love handles lipo’d to bother singing for the Purple Palace on Bree. And anyway, we prefer to do our own singing, thank you very much.

After much wringing of well-manicured hands, even more biting of extravagantly rouged lips, and a lot of help from some very special friends, we managed to come up with a plan that would save Gate69 from the abyss. We have spent the last couple of months very hard at work putting that plan into action, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve been up to!

New Name – New Look – Same Heart!  A lot has changed at 87 Bree Street…

The Trolley Dollies™ have left the building, we’ve given the place a facelift (if it was good enough for Joan Rivers, it’s good enough for us) and we’ve tweaked our name ever so slightly (did anyone understand the “Gate” bit in the first place?). However, the most important part of the biggest little theatre in Cape Town remains entirely unchanged – its heart. That will never change.

SixtyNine picks up exactly where Gate69 left off. It will continue to be the place you come to when you need to escape the horrors of the outside world for a few hours; where you are always greeted with a smile and a hug; where you are treated like family, no matter who you are, and where it’s customary to be sworn at by your waitress if you get on her nerves.

So, come home, bitches. It’s time.
