Benguela Cove Voted into Top 100 Of Worlds’ Best Vineyards
12 July 2023
Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, located in the popular holiday region of Hermanus, South Africa, has secured a place among the Top 100 World's Best Vineyards. This prestigious list celebrates outstanding wine tourism experiences, showcasing vineyards that captivate visitors with their exceptional offerings.
The meticulous selection process involves a Voting Academy comprising over 500 leading wine experts, sommeliers, and travel specialists. These industry professionals nominate vineyards based on various criteria, including ambiance, activities, cuisine, staff, views, value for money, and overall experience.
As part of the Benguela Collection - the international wine and hospitality group owned by the Streeter family - Benguela Cove is positioned on the Hermanus Wine Route, alongside the Atlantic Ocean in a serene lagoon. The estate provides a unique setting for wine enthusiasts, establishing itself as an exceptional wine tourism destination.
Owner Penny Streeter OBE expressed her joy at Benguela Cove's remarkable achievement, securing an impressive 53rd ranking among approximately 65,000 vineyards worldwide. This recognition within just a decade since acquiring the estate reaffirms the dedication of the vineyard and hospitality teams, as well as their commitment to sustainability and passion for producing exceptional South African wines.
"I am thrilled to see Benguela Cove being recognised as one of the world's top vineyards. This extraordinary accomplishment within just ten years since its acquisition shows the dedication of our teams and our commitment to sustainability," said Penny Streeter OBE. "Acknowledgment on a global scale fuels our determination to continue providing unparalleled experiences. I am grateful to everyone who has supported us throughout this incredible journey."
Cellar Door Experience of the Year:
In addition to this accolade, Benguela Cove recently won the title of Cellar Door Experience of the Year among all South African vineyards. The estate offers luxurious accommodation in a secure residential area, with oceanside villas featuring en-suite bedrooms, private pools, and Wi-Fi access.
At Benguela Cove, visitors can indulge in a range of offerings, including an oyster bar, the popular Moody Lagoon Restaurant, wine tastings, and a majestic pontoon tour around the tranquil lagoon. The estate hosts a year-round calendar of entertainment, featuring live music performances and art exhibitions.
Under the expert guidance of acclaimed winemaker Johann Fourie, Benguela Cove annually produces an impressive 350,000 bottles of wine. The estate's diverse slopes, varied soils, and favorable exposure to prevailing winds contribute to the excellence of each varietal, resulting in unique wines that beautifully represent the estate's terroir.
The winery features cutting-edge technology, a harmonious blend of traditional and modern fermentation vessels, and magnificent crystal chandeliers, creating an ambiance for South African and an increasingly international range of guests to enjoy, from the USA, UK, Germany and other countries.
Benguela Cove's commitment to conservation and sustainability is as strong as its passion for crafting exceptional wines. It holds the title of a World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) Conservation Champion and is widely recognised as a leader in ecotourism wine destinations. Situated within the UNESCO-designated Kogelberg Biosphere, the vineyard enjoys a truly exceptional position, boasting the longest seaboard of any vineyard across the globe.
Building on her success in South Africa, Penny Streeter OBE has expanded her vision to the UK, establishing new vineyards in Sussex at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in 2018. With the guidance of South African winemaker Johann Fourie, the first wines from these UK vineyards will be available for tasting and purchase in 2024.
