There are few cafés which serve up views like those from Bites Beach Café by Morukuru Family De Hoop, or whose walls could speak of such times past. Bites breathes new life into an ancient structure.
With a casual daytime menu of fresh fish, wood-fired pizzas and burgers, Bites is open to walkers and day visitors to De Hoop Nature Reserve for lunch and coffee (as well as Morukuru Family De Hoop residents) whilst in the evening it will be exclusively for Morukuru Family guests, either from Beach Lodge or Ocean House, when the menu will offer African-themed fine dining featuring South African dishes with a twist.
Offering both indoor and outdoor seating, Bites offers a ringside seat for land-based whale watching, when the Southern Right whales migrate to these waters to calve between July and the end of October. A fireplace will takes the chill off in the winter months, and, in summer, the outdoor seating offers visitors the perfect arena from which to take in and soak up the remarkable wildlife, views and sun.
The De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of South Africa’s true wildernesses formed of remarkable beaches, sand-dunes, fynbos and vlei wetlands – a place of immense beauty. Halfway between Cape Town and Knysna it remains an uncommercial hidden gem for nature lovers.

What’s on the table?
When you step through our doors on Christmas Day, you’ll be greeted with the smell of fresh-baked rolls, warm spiced grills, and the enticing fragrance of fynbos-infused dressings. Here’s what’s in store:
On arrival: A basket of freshly baked rolls, accompanied by chicken liver pâté and flavoured butter – warm, homely, and impossible to resist.
Starter:Our signature Hot Smoked BBos Trout, with a colourful beetroot & vodka crème fraiche. It’s an exciting fusion of local flavours, showcasing the freshest ingredients from the Overberg.
Mains: (Salads & Veg) Morukuru Harvest Green Salad with a balsamic vanilla olive glaze: A garden-fresh celebration, balanced by the sweetness of vanilla.
Beetroot and Butternut Salad with Morukuru fynbos honey & blue cheese dressing: A true countryside classic with a sweet twist.
Creamy Potato Herb Salad with dill cucumber & coddled egg: An indulgent yet refreshing side, perfect for summer.
Seasonal Roasted Vegetables: Rooted in simplicity, roasted just right to bring out their natural sweetness.From the grill (served at your table): We’ll fire up our grill for a festive braai with succulent proteins that add a South African spin to your Christmas meal:
