Making the Circle Bigger - A Love Letter from Danny and the Team at Ladles of Love
15 August 2025
Dear Reader,
This week we focus on Gauteng where the sun is shining, and our warehouse is a hive of activity as volunteers with willing hands and big hearts help us tackle our tasks. I joined our Jozi Ladles of Love team, Phindi and Themba - to see first-hand the scale of items produced and donated from our Mandela Day initiative.
This is not only from our own amazing event at Kyalami Grand Prix Race Circuit, but from many corporate events where like Amrod, they hosted big volunteer activations at their own premises. Wow - I was blown away! Even though Ladles of Love is relatively new in Gauteng, our local supporters and corporates knocked it out the park!
Feeling overwhelmed with gratitude for the volume of non-perishable food we counted in our warehouse plus the huge number of educational items produced, we realised it was time to make our circle bigger. By this I mean onboarding more preschools, which have been sitting on our waiting list and desperate for food.
This must be the best part of the work we do, being able to offer a lifeline to a principal so that their children and teachers are nourished with nutritious food daily.
On a mission to vet preschools, we set off to do infield visits and our first stop was Ayanda the founder of Sammy D Educare situated in Orange Farm. What an eye-opener, as Orange Farm is one of the biggest informal settlemets in South Africa and home to over a million people. This amazing and inspirational man runs a preschool with 45 children in a poverty-stricken area where there is no electricity or running water. He himself has a tragic story - one that left him an orphan living on the streets as a young boy, before eventually being adopted by a pastor and formalising his education.
Now it’s his turn to give back and he does so with grit, grace and determination to provide the best start in life for as many little children as he can, albeit against all odds. From next week Ayanda and more principals like him in Gauteng and Western Cape, will join our Nourish Our Children Programme and the impact of this will be life changing.
In whatever way you are supporting us, thank you for making our circle bigger and increasing our impact. To all our new monthly donors – we are incredibly grateful, as your regular donations are funding more fresh veggies and essentials to enrich our preschool meals.
With gratitude to YOU our game changers!
