Franschhoek Ignites The Arts: Join In The Celebration Of ‘Franschhoek Creates’ This November

28 October 2024

Franschhoek's vibrant arts scene will come alive from November 1st to 17th during the much-anticipated ‘Franschhoek Creates’ festival, which showcases a dazzling array of exhibitions that seamlessly weave together creativity, culture and community. Art enthusiasts will have the opportunity to engage with innovative works from a diverse group of talented artists, each exploring unique themes and mediums.

At the historic Manor House, Boschendal x Brundyn, in collaboration with David Krut Projects, presents "Beyond the Page," a thought-provoking exhibition that seamlessly merges art and literature. Featuring works from renowned artists such as Willem Boshoff, Wilma Cruise and William Kentridge, the exhibition challenges the traditional dichotomy between image and word, revealing the deeper meanings that arise when these elements intertwine.

Continuing this exploration of artistic expression, Caryn Scrimgeour's exquisite solo exhibition, "Things I Lost Along the Way," at Everard Read at Leeu Estates is a must-visit. Scrimgeour’s meticulously crafted paintings mesmerize with their impeccable detail and harmonious palette, juxtaposing delicate curios with everyday objects in a captivating manner.

The powerful works of Vusi Khumalo take centre stage at Everard Read, where he presents his 15th solo exhibition. As a respected figure in the South African art landscape, Khumalo's latest pieces delve into the complex realities of informal settlements, capturing their raw beauty and inherent challenges through bold compositions and a vibrant colour palette, promising to evoke emotion and spark conversations.

This visual feast continues with Elmarie van Straten's "Night Mares in Paradise," proudly displayed at The Gallery at Grande Provence. This evocative exhibition invites reflection and explores the duality of paradise, uncovering the unsettling tensions and shadows beneath its surface.

In celebration of a decade of collaboration, EBONY/CURATED presents a retrospective exhibition by Hugh Byrne, highlighting key works that chart his artistic evolution over the past ten years. Complementing this showcase, a solo exhibition by ceramicist Frank Nthunya features stunning hand-built pieces inspired by ancient African traditions, rounding out this diverse artistic experience.

Then for a truly unique perspective on art, animal lovers won't want to miss a visit to Farm Sanctuary, where the heart-warming story of Pigcasso - the world’s most famous animal artist - continues with her protégé, Baanksy. After gaining fame for her whimsical artworks that have sold for millions, Pigcasso’s legacy thrives in Baanksy, a sheep who has embraced her creative spirit. Visitors to Farm Sanctuary SA can witness the artistic talents of both Baanksy and the late Pigcasso while learning about the important messages of compassion for farmed animals and sustainable living.

Finally, for those looking to appreciate art in its liquid form, Babylonstoren offers a unique experience with its interactive "The Story of Wine Museum," led by museologist Elsa Vogts. This immersive journey into the history and cultivation of wine features captivating artifacts and virtual reality experiences that transport visitors into the world of winemaking. Additionally, guests will have the opportunity to taste exclusive, limited-edition wines, further enhancing their appreciation for the artistry behind each bottle.

With such a diverse line-up of exhibitions and events, ‘Franschhoek Creates’ invites everyone to support local talent and immerse themselves in the magic of art in all its forms. This serves as just a brief glimpse into the myriad offerings and creative showcases on display.
