The Wine Lands Restaurant
96 Winery Road Restaurant opened its doors in May 1996 with the intention of providing sumptuous cuisine set in the rolling hills of the Helderberg in Somerset West. Our inspiration comes from our own roots in South Africa coupled with international nuances. Most of our delectable dishes are prepared with freshly selected organic produce and updated daily. The standard menu is updated four times a year ensuring you of a decidedly current array of tastes.
96 Winery Road Restaurant was the master-mind of ex-Johannesburg restaurateur, Ken Forrester and Devon Valley wine maker, Martin Meinert. Prior to the opening they debated the name “Butternut” but then after much discussion and a few wines, they decided to name the restaurant after the road it was situated on and the year they launched the restaurant.
The grapes are harvested from Ken’s nearby farm, Scholtzenhof and are then vinified by Martin in his winery, Devon Crest. The vineyards distinguish the Ken Forrester and Meinert ranges of premium wines. The wines are available for tasting and sale at the restaurant. Ken has shown his metal with his award winning wine list at Gatriles in Johannesburg and now offers a list of over 200 wines to complement your meal.
Ken’s brother, Allan teamed up with 96 Winery Road as manager and partner soon after the opening. When Kathy relocated to Plettenberg Bay, Natasha Wray became a worthy partner.
We recognize the importance of a well-trained team of staff and dedicate much of our time to this task. Most of our chefs started in the scullery and have worked their way up, even as far as Sous chef positions. Natasha’s part has been crucial in driving this initiative and we are proud to say we have maintained our track record of serving consistently delicious food combined with excellent service at 96 Winery Road.
