BALDUCCI’S LAUNCHES ITALIAN CHIC IN AFRICA

First impressions count for a lot in our daily lives. So, it's no surprise when you walk into Balducci's at the V&A Waterfront that the clean, understated formality creates an immediate sense of well-being. The crisp white linen, racks of sparkling wine glasses, the comfortable sight of a well-used pizza oven and the gracious waiters makes you at once relaxed and eager to have the experience of eating here.

And eat here you must. Balducci's once again has created a new, unrivalled menu of contemporary dishes that reflect the most traditional elements of food and culinary styles. This is the food that critics the world over define as "'relaxed, restorative, everyday" while at the same time being creative, modern and affordable.

To achieve this, the chefs have looked to the culinary delights of Italy. The offerings from Balducci's Italian Chic in Africa menu include a delicious onion zuppa garnished with an African macadamia nut pesto; or try the carpaccio of venison, or the melanzane alla Parmigiano, amongst others. The luscious line-up of pizzas includes specialities like the white pizza with mozzarella, goat’s chevin cheese, smoked kwaito (Gouda) and Parmigiano, with sautéed spinach and garlic on a béchamel sauce base (no tomato) or the osso buco, the braised duck, the Parma ham or game ragù and many more.

The emphasis is on providing good quality food that is simple, fresh, cooked with the minimum of fuss and served in style. The people who eat here are more interested in what is on the plate, than who is in the kitchen. Balducci’s offers simple, elegant meals that are created to bring out the real flavours of the product. Of course, it helps that this all happens in such a beautiful space.

There is something deeply satisfying to sit in Balducci's, looking out across the harbour, breathing the aromas of a fresh plate of pasta de mer—an intoxicating medley of fresh local mussels, black tiger prawns, calamari and line fish topped with an African-style arrabiata sauce. Or perhaps sampling the African game Bolognaise, ostrich lasagne, melanzane alla Parmigiano, slow-cooked oxtail and braised duck shepherd’s pie, or a simple beef fillet, cooked exactly as you want, served with some thick cut fries and the Balducci's house salad—lettuce, red cabbage, tomato, cucumber, onion, carrots, egg and feta sprinkled with the chef's dressing and some Parmigiano. Round off with the Balducci’s special dessert of amaretti biscuits in liqueur with almond flakes, mascarpone and chocolate chips, served with hazelnut ice cream, strawberries and cream.

To go with these culinary delights is an extensive wine list ranging from the Balducci's excellent House Wines, which include a refreshing white and a superb red at R75 and R95 a bottle respectively - to exquisite offerings from our local boutique vineyards—think Ataraxia in Walker Bay or Topaz—to the impeccable bottles from the big guns—Vergelegen, Hamilton Russell, Warwick, to name a few.

When we eat out, whether we are entertaining friends or family or simply having a pleasant downtime moment with a loved one, we want to be comfortable. Balducci's not only wraps you in the comfort zone with its pleasant and discreet service, it is now making an addition to its existing selection of trusted food offerings. If you don't feel like relaxing with one of their incomparable pizzas— of which there are more than 40 to choose from like the Cape Town Club, with grilled chicken, mozzarella and bacon, topped with cherry tomatoes, avocado, chilled chopped lettuce and a splash of home-made mayonnaise, or the pizza alla melanzane or oxtail, amongst others —you can opt for that all-time comfort food—the hamburger.

As to be expected, a Balducci's burger is like no other. Balducci's have gone back to basics and rebuilt the classic burger into a culinary delight. Choose from a variety of 180g pure aged Karan beef sirloin and rump gourmet burgers served on a dense, lightly toasted fresh bun with caramelised onion, home-made deli pickled cucumber, coleslaw, thick cut fries and a secret relish.

Here we really understand first impressions: It looks like a burger, it tastes like a burger and you will remember it as the best burger in town.
