New summer sensations with new culinary awards

Celebrated for gourmet simplicity portrayed by unpretentious Cape Country cuisine, popular Winelands restaurant 96 Winery Road refreshes the senses with a new Summer Menu and an impressive array of new local and international accolades to match.

Since opening its doors in 1996, this culinary pulse in the heart of the Helderberg, has given unassuming country-style dining a new lease of life with its hearty yet haute approach.

After more than a decade of whetting discerning appetites from across the globe, 96 Winery Road is still reaping the rewards for its unique recipe of good, honest food, friendly service and informal, homely atmosphere as endorsed by a raving review in a recent issue of the New York Times.

Judged by the world’s finest culinary critics, 96 Winery Road’s latest awards includes a third consecutive listing in the esteemed 2008 Restaurant Awards of Wine Spectator - hailed as the most definitive wine publication in the USA. In 2006, this restaurant conquered virgin territory as the first South African establishment ever to be ranked in this competition. The restaurant’s wine list scored a Grand Award for an impressive bouquet of premium local wines and world benchmarks including a smattering of peculiarities from leading wine-producing countries.

Founded by renowned wine personalities Ken Forrester and Martin Meinert, it is no wonder the restaurant’s wine list also continues to impress the judging panel of the prestigious Diners Club Wine List Awards. No newcomer to the competition, 96 Winery Road once again took highest honours in 2008 by clinching a Diamond award.

Similar to its winning wine list which displays vintage depth and excellent breadth across several wine regions, the restaurant enjoys critical acclaim for a menu that pleases a wide range of taste preferences as proven by the outcome of the 2008 Eat Out People’s Choice Awards.

96 Winery Road triumphed with a foursome victory in this popular South African voting poll which included listings in the Top 10 Steak House; Top 10 Local Favourites; Top 10 Country & Winelands and Fab 15 categories.

In addition, this landmark eatery was acknowledged by the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Programme for its “Modern Cape Country cuisine and awe-inspiring wine list in a seductive farm setting” and again listed amongst the country’s crème de la crème at their latest Restaurant Awards.

Luring food lovers who enjoy an unhurried dining experience with a sense of place, 96 Winery Road captures the spirit of the season with a new, lighter summer menu, unleashing a fusion of fresh, innovative dishes, simple in structure yet complex in texture and flavour.

Crisp new taste sensations that tantalise amongst a line-up of popular old-time classics include a baby beetroot salad, dressed with Dukha goats cheese and spiced walnuts. Roasted scallops, wrapped in citrus glazed pancetta join crispy coconut prawns, perked up with a peanut, chilli and lime dipping sauce amongst the seafood newcomers.

Fish lovers will also delight in the whole trout, on pea and feta puree, served with roasted tomatoes whilst a wild mushroom tarte tatin, smothered with truffle cream is an indulging must-try for vegetarians. Evergreen favourites that remain on the menu include the famous Gatriles duck and cherry pie as well as the house speciality, ‘Hollandse’ pepper fillet.

96 Winery Road’s secret in serving the perfect steak lies in using only grain fed beef, dry aged in their own cold room, ensuring succulent flavour and true texture. The robust Prime Rib, accompanied by an array of gourmet sauces, has been a hearty speciality since 1996.

“After more than a decade of dining we know what food our guests want and expect and with our new seasonal-inspired menu we aim not to disappoint. Our secret has always been serving ‘real’ food with our focus not so much on the frills and fancy plating but on the quality of our ingredients, ensuring lots of flavour on your plate,” explains chef Natasha Wray, who heads up the kitchen and is one of the restaurant partners.

96 Winery Road is open from Monday to Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sundays for lunch only. The restaurant is situated on Zandberg Estate, Winery Road, off the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.
